LIFE COACHING

Life Coaching can also be referred to as Personal Development Coaching and may also incorporate some of the other main aspects of a client's life.  Life Coaching is usually done one-on-one, over the phone with clients who desire to get their lives in order and to take themselves to the "next level." Although the coaching process is universal, Life Coaches specifically work with the public to generally improve their lives.  Unlike areas such as leadership coaching and relationship coaching, the emphasis in Life Coaching is to help people learn and know about themselves, and later, expand that by sharing who they are with others.  Life Coaching usually consists on 30-40 minutes weekly sessions.

COUPLES COACHING

Couples Coaching is also sometimes referred to as Relationship Coaching and is specifically geared to working with two people (although in many cases, Couples Coaching can be done with only one member of the couple).  The "couple" can be husband and wife, gay partners, boyfriend and girlfriend, mother and daughter, or even two business partners.  A distinction from Life Coaching is that Couples Coaching focuses on two people as a unit usually to improve the relationship by finding common goals and values, developing an agreed-to agenda, and working and building from whatever current strengths a couple has.

Unlike marriage counseling, coaching does not go into psychological aspects of why people behave as they do, deal with blame, nor dwell in the past, except to possibly point out what had previously occurred to learn from it.  Couples Coaching usually consists on 30-60 minutes sessions.

GROUP COACHING

Group Coaching, as the name implies, is a process by which a coach works with more than two people.  The group is usually in the corporate arena but can also be a family, or people within an organization or focus area.  Group Coaches are very good at finding a group's energy, strengths, cultural concerns, and individual contributions or challenges that people in the group may have that affect the whole group.  Nearly always, the group has similar goals.  Most group Coaching sessions last at least an hour.

CORPORATE COACHING

While any of the above types of coaching can be involved in Corporate Coaching, the distinction is that the Corporate Coach's job is more likely to focus on outer-directed tasks (the overt goal) and perhaps later on inner-directed work (the covert goal).  A Corporate Coach can work with managers, line workers, executives, and "high potentials" (those who show great promise for an organization and need to be groomed to move up the ladder) to develop them and help them become more efficient and effective in their jobs.

Another aspect of Corporate Coaching may be to work with a task force, group, or even an executive, while viewing the corporation itself as the client.  Unlike a consultant, the Corporate Coach helps those involved to develop and buy into a plan and then partners with them to put that plan into action.  This type of coaching can be done in person, on the phone, or a combination of the two, depending on the needs an desires of the client.  Travel time is usually added to the overall cost.  The sessions are usually an hour.

How is Coaching different from Counseling and Psychotherapy?

"Counseling" and “psychotherapy” are terms that are often used interchangeably, but there are some distinct differences. A “Counselor” is required to meet specific state and national licensing requirements. No governing bodies regulate titles such as "Psychotherapist" and "Therapist," so anyone could claim these designations. Counseling usually deals with deep issues from the past, and promotes healing.

Coaching can also be very healing, and is action and results driven. It focuses on creating a positive, empowering, vibrant new future. The coaching we provide is therapeutic, but it is not therapy.
